The Weight of Action: Defining Ourselves Through What We Do

by Marco Milone | Jan 29, 2025 | Existential Philosophy

To live is to act, and only through action do we truly exist. Life is not a mere sequence of days but a continuous unfolding of choices, a tapestry woven with the threads of our deeds. We never truly know our future, not even in our deepest intentions, for they remain suspended in the realm of possibility until we bring them to life through action. Thought alone is weightles, it carries no substance, no force until it takes shape in the world. And so, it is through what we do that the world is revealed, and in turn, reveals us.
We are not what we think ourselves to be, nor what we wish to become, but what we make of ourselves, moment by moment, through the choices we dare to take. To exist is not to be, but to become, to forge meaning out of uncertainty, to shape our own essence in the fires of decision. Sartre reminds us that existence precedes essence: we are not born with a predetermined purpose, nor are we bound to a fate inscribed in the stars. We are neither characters in a prewritten story nor mere spectators in the theater of life. We write ourselves into being, step by step, action by action.
And so, every choice, no matter how small, becomes an assertion of who we are. Every gesture, every movement, every decision carries weight, for it is through them that we carve the contours of our identity. There is no refuge in words alone, no safety in thought, no absolution in intention. To say, I will, is not enough. To dream, I might, is not enough. Only I do carries meaning, for it is only through action that freedom takes form.
Yet, in a world where uncertainty looms over every horizon, it is tempting to hesitate, to stand still at the crossroads of possibility, fearful of making the wrong choice. But to refuse to act is still a choice, a choice to let time and circumstance dictate our fate instead of shaping it with our own hands. The uncertainty of the future is not a boundary, not a wall to be feared, but the very soil from which our existence grows. To be unsure of what is to come is not a weakness; it is the condition of all who truly live.
The open horizon of the unknown is not an abyss but an invitation. To act is to embrace this invitation, to step forward despite not knowing what lies ahead. It is to accept the risk of choice, to engage with the world with the awareness that every deed not only unveils who we are but carves the very meaning of our being. It is not a question of whether we will shape ourselves, but how shape ourselves we must. The self is not a fixed entity; it is a continuous creation, a sculpture unfinished, a story still being written.
In the end, life is nothing more than an unceasing act of self-creation, where our free will transforms possibility into reality. There is no final, definitive self that we must find or uncover, no essence waiting to be discovered. There is only the self we choose to become. And herein lies our greatest responsibility: to be true, not in what we think or intend, but in what we do.
For it is in action that we reveal ourselve, not to the world alone, but to ourselves.

Solitary figure amidst swirling cosmos.
